{"id":7990,"date":"2025-12-11T11:40:29","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T11:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xjenzamalta.mt\/?p=7990"},"modified":"2026-03-09T13:20:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:20:18","slug":"jpi-oceans-offshore-freshened-groundwater-joint-transnational-call-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xjenzamalta.mt\/mt\/2025\/12\/11\/jpi-oceans-offshore-freshened-groundwater-joint-transnational-call-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"JPI Oceans Offshore Freshened Groundwater &#8211; Joint Transnational Call 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>JPI Oceans Joint Transnational Call 2025 on Offshore Freshened Groundwater <\/strong>is now officially open, aiming to act as a\u00a0\u201cproof of concept\u201d through a pioneering scientific exploration campaign, generating critical data on OFG distribution, properties, recharge mechanisms, and long-term viability &#8211; laying essential groundwork for the sustainable future management of this promising unconventional water resource.<\/p>\n<p>Xjenza Malta is proud to participate as one of the Research Funding Organisations launching this Call along with Italy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/ministero-dell-universit%C3%A0-e-della-ricerca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ministero dell&#8217;Universit\u00e0 e della Ricerca<\/strong><\/a>) and uniting partners from Germany (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/bundesministerium-fuer-forschung-technologie-und-raumfahrt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bundesministerium f\u00fcr Bildung und Forschung<\/strong><\/a>), Italy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/regione-autonoma-friuli-venezia-giulia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia<\/strong><\/a>) and Greece (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/hellenic-centre-for-marine-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hellenic Centre for Marine Research<\/strong><\/a>, in-kind), with co-branding indicated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/un-ocean-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UN Ocean Decade<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Call focused on two main themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Theme 1<\/strong>: characterisation, validation, and assessment of OFG bodies. Through an innovative scientific exploration campaign, this theme will address knowledge gaps on:<\/li>\n<li>Functioning of OFG systems and onshore-offshore connectivity<\/li>\n<li>Age of emplacement of OFG bodies<\/li>\n<li>Hydraulic and hydrogeologic properties<\/li>\n<li>Potential environmental impacts from OFG utilisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Theme 2<\/strong>: Environmental Assessment of Offshore Freshened Groundwater Seeps. Developing robust environmental baselines through:<\/li>\n<li>Seep characterisation and functioning mechanisms<\/li>\n<li>Seep-related ecosystems characterisation (bio-geochemical aspects)<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive monitoring protocols<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Malta-based entities are eligible for funding of <strong>up to \u20ac300,000 per project<\/strong> to join international consortia addressing the following knowledge gaps across the two abovementioned themes:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83c\udf0a<\/strong> <strong>Data scarcity and inconsistency<\/strong>: generating systematic and comprehensive data on OFG properties and dynamics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83c\udf3f<\/strong> <strong>Environmental, technological, and economic feasibility<\/strong>: assessing the environmental impacts and evaluating the technological and economic viability of potential OFG utilisation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2696\ufe0f<\/strong><strong> Legal and governance frameworks<\/strong>: informing and potentially contributing to the development of guidelines and regulatory frameworks for the integration of OFG exploration and exploitation into
