The PSU supports the government in the development of Malta’s Smart Specialisation Strategy and provides technical support to the governance structure set up for its implementation.

R&I Programmes

The Research & Innovation Unit (R&I) manages three national funding streams by way of direct implementation support to the National R&I Strategic Plan 2023 – 2027: Fusion, Thematic programmes and the Research Networking Scheme.

Internationalisation

The Internationalisation Unit supports scientific-research expert stakeholders based in Malta to actively engage in transnational Research and Innovation (R&I) projects by developing, managing and/or facilitating their participation in various bilateral, regional and international funding programmes.

Framework Programme – Horizon Europe

The Framework Programme Unit serves as the National Contact Point and provides guidance to all Maltese expert stakeholders interested in applying for Horizon Europe funding. Horizon Europe is the current EU Framework Programme (2021-2027), which has a budget of €95.5 billion. Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation for Maltese researchers and organisations.

Space

The Space Unit, through the Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS), makes Malta part of a larger pan-European network that fosters growth, development and broader collaboration opportunities to develop a thriving local Space sector.
